As a proud Motswana, the month of September holds a special place in my heart. It’s a time when our nation, Botswana, comes alive with the vibrant spirit of independence. But it’s not just about the flag-waving and the national anthem; it’s also about celebrating our rich cultural heritage, and what better way to do that than through our traditional food?

Thats why I will be doing a four week series highlight some local flavours and even putting a modern twist to timeless classics.

So lets get into it!

Week 1: Nourishing Traditions

When I think of the first week of September, I can almost smell the irresistible aroma of Seswaa wafting through the air. It’s the dish that brings families together around the table, where stories are shared, and laughter echoes through the room. Morogo, that beloved wild spinach, is more than just food – it’s a connection to the land that sustains us.

Week 2: Grains of our Ancestors

The second week is all about exploring the grains that have fed generations of Batswana. I remember watching my Mom expertly prepare Pap, turning the sorghum into a comforting staple that’s as much a part of our identity as it is a meal. Dikgobe, with its mix of legumes, is a taste of tradition that reminds us of the importance of unity and diversity.

Week 3: From Wilderness to Table

Ah, the third week takes me back to the untamed beauty of our landscapes. The taste of Braised Mopane Worms, once an acquired taste for me, is now a delicacy that connects me to the wild heart of Botswana. And those Marinated Game Meats, seasoned with the essence of our surroundings, remind me of the time-honored skills of our hunters and gatherers.

Week 4: Evolving Traditions

The final week is a celebration of how we’ve grown while holding onto our roots. Our chefs are artists, infusing modern creativity with traditional wisdom. It’s a testament to our ability to adapt and honor our past simultaneously. The fusion dishes and innovative presentations are a reflection of a nation that’s proud of its heritage and excited about its future.

This September, as we raise our voices in unity and pride for Botswana, let’s also raise our forks to the flavors that make us who we are. From the dusty streets of our towns to the lush greenery of our countryside, every bite tells a story of resilience, identity, and freedom. Here’s to a month of savoring not just food, but the essence of being Motswana.

Pula!
